EMDR Based Trauma Work

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitizaion and Reprocessing) Therapy is a type of evidence based trauma-focused psychotherapy.

EMDR can help you process upsetting memories, thoughts, and feelings related to the trauma. By processing these experiences, you can get relief from trauma symptoms which may come from military service, first responder work, childhood physical and sexual abuse, car accidents, rape and other physical assaults, natural disasters, bullying and other forms of emotional abuse and intimidation.

After trauma people often have trouble making sense of what happened to them. EMDR helps you process the trauma, which can allow you to start to heal.

All of our therapists have specialized training in the treatment of trauma and utilize EMDR. Susan Lawlor has been practicing EMDR for 10 years. Rhonda Septelka is certified in EMDR and specializes in trauma treatment for children. Lindsay Beckman is currently completing the necessary training to be certified in EMDR as well.

Depression and Other Anxiety Issues

Most people experience feelings of anxiety or depression at times. Grief, loss of a job, divorce, illness, and other stressors can lead to feelings of sadness, worry, frustration, and loneliness. These are normal reactions to difficult life situations.

However, some people experience these feelings daily, without a known stressor. This can interfere with the ability to carry out every day activities such as getting to work on time, proper self-care, or caring for children. In this case, people might be suffering from depression, anxiety, or a combination of the two.

Effective therapy includes CBT, learning and utilizing relaxation techniques and implementing good mental hygiene practices including mindfulness and individual based practices for overall well-being.

Divorce Mediation and Pre & Post Divorce Issues

Divorce is not an easy decision or process. There is more to it than just the legal divorce. There is a process of emotionally detaching, healing and being able to move on.

We have worked with couples and individuals both pre and post divorce to facilitate  and continue this process in order to reduce distress and conflict and move towards better closure.

Remember, the end of your relationship is also the beginning of the rest of your life – you deserve to make the next chapter a positive one.

Family Counseling

Families come in all shapes and forms,  whether that family is composed of blood relatives, adopted parents, or a foster family. This family that we acquire when we are born influences every aspect of our lives, from our first moments to our last as well as what is happening in our current co-created family.

Family therapy offers families a way to  develop or maintain a healthy, functional family. Family counseling is a form of treatment that is designed to address specific issues affecting the health and functioning of a family. It can be used to help a family through a difficult period of time, a major transition, or mental or behavioral health issues in individual family members which is affecting the whole.

Child and Adolescent Therapy

Play therapy is an effective therapy method for children that helps build on normal communication and learning processes used by children. Play therapy can help children express what is troubling them when they may not have adequate verbal language to engage in more traditional talk therapy that adults use.In play therapy, toys and expressive art projects put internal processes into an outward form and play is the child’s language.  Our play therapists work to help children learn more adaptive behaviors and better emotional and social skills. The positive relationship that develops between therapist and child may also be used to promote brain development and provide insight about and resolution of inner conflicts or dysfunctional thinking.
