About Susan

Susan Lawlor, MA, MFT

Modern life can create a lot of anxiety. Many people start feeling overwhelmed with challenges and problems that they don’t know how to solve. Past trauma can interfere with how you are coping and feeling in the present, and contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety. Therapy can be an effective way of starting to change this by changing the way you feel about and deal with your present situations.

Therapy should be a safe place to explore some new perspectives about yourself, your world, and your relationships in order to experience personal growth and more happiness and satisfaction in your life. There are methods to facilitate healing from past trauma and to keep it from influencing what is happening to you now and how you live your life today.

I will work with you in a creative, collaborative way to move your life forward by learning new tools and getting unstuck from repetitive, non-productive patterns and habits. I look forward to learning about you, understanding you better, and working with you to achieve your therapy goals.

I have 10+ years of experience working with people from all walks of life. Personally, I have experienced divorce, blended family issues, and co-parenting two children through their teenage years. I have a non-judgmental approach towards my clients; I recognize their strengths and support them in their challenges.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist and utilize a number of different approaches in treating individuals, families, and couples. I utilize the Gottman method, the Developmental Model for treating couples from the Couples Institute, and other approaches to my work with couples in all stages of their relationship.

I am fully certified in the use of EMDR which is a very effective and efficient way of treating trauma. I am also a Certified as a Clinical Trauma Professional by the International Association of Trauma Professionals.  (IATP)

I utilize CBT, DBT, other mindfulness approaches and personality based models to help clients deepen their understanding of themselves and other significant people in their lives. I challenge clients to examine their thoughts, their feelings and the meanings that they make of their lives and the challenges, changes, and events that inevitably occur all throughout life, and in doing so create the awareness and power for change.
